– Day 2 – A visit to Mma Ramotswe’s home village, Mochudi
This morning Alexander travelled to the charming village of Mochudi, about an hour out of town, the home of the fictional Mma Ramotswe from The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency. Here he was welcomed by celebrated singer Nnunu Ramagotsi – Africa’s Jewel – who shared her beautiful songs and stories. She is one of Botswana’s most distinguished Afro-Jazz vocalists and cultural storytellers and her vocals are a luminous blend of Afro-Jazz, soul, and traditional Tswana rhythms, rooted in heritage. You can review a little of her latest album, Sephonono, on Spotifiy. It is rich and haunting and quite beautiful.

Mma Ramagotsi sang at the hilltop Mochudi Museum, which tells the story of the Bakgatla and the kingdom which stretches across the border into the Republic of South Africa (and includes the famous Lost City). The museum was founded in 1975 in a former school building. The focus of the museum is the history of the community over the last century but artefacts held stretch back 50,000 years. From the terrace the museum offers wonderful views of the village and the surrounding hills.
While t the museum, Alexander opened their art exhibition, and presented the No. 1 Art Award.

Alexander has returned to Botswana. This is a guided tour for readers from all over the world, with Okavango Delta Explorations. Alexander receives no fee for this adventure but benefits from the company of readers from around the world who share his love for the country. He is travelling in the company of his great friend, journalist and film maker Mats Ögren Wanger and in the footsteps of his much loved character from The No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, Precious Ramotswe. As ever, we are grateful to Mats Ögren Wanger for his photography and videos which help to bring this journey to life.
